Puns (だじゃれ、ごろあわせ)

 

When the smog lifts in Los Angeles, U C L A.

 

ロスのスモッグがなくなると、you see LA. (=UCLA)

「ロスが見えますよ」と言うだじゃれだ。

 

Riddles　（なぞなぞ）

 

I travel all around the world but never leave the corner.

 

What am I?

 

私は世界中を旅して回るが、決してかどを去らない。

Cornerにはかどとすみの意味があります。

部屋のすみもcornerと言う。

封筒のすみもcornerと言う

よって回答はstamp(切手)である。

わかりますか？

 

 

 

One –liners　（短いがユーモアに富んだ言葉）

The more ….. , the more …… これは構文ですが、

…..すれば、～するほど、…..だ。

 

多くの人に会えば会うほど、より私の犬が好きだ。

 

世の中、変な常識を欠いた人が多いですから、

多いですよね。

息子は医者にかかっており、体育のクラスは
受けられません。彼を処刑してください。

Executeとexcuseの間違いですね。怖い！

Please excuse Gloria. She has been sick and under the doctor.

グロリアを休ませてください。彼女は病気で医者の下にいます。
慣用表現の間違いですね。
本当は、”under the doctor’s care”   （ひとつ前参考）
それを、「医者の下にいる」と書いてしまった。

娘が医者の下にいるのは危険ですね。

Lesson1 Humor 解説

ジョーク (joke) は聞き手や読み手を笑わせたり、

humorを感じさせる小咄や短い文の事。

日本語では音と意味の近い冗句（じょうく）と

当て字されることがある。

ここでいう「ジョーク」は、

悪ふざけ(practical joke)とは異なる。


The Form of Jokes

殆どのジョークは、基本的に2つの部分からなる。

それは、設定（例えば、「男がバーに入り…」）と、

聞き手を笑わせるのに必要な皮肉を

感じさせる落ちである。

「落ち」の事を英語でpunch lineと言う。

Joke を聞いてわからなければ　”What’s the punch line?”

でもたいていの場合は、どこがpunchlineかはわかるものです。

「多分あそこがpunchlineだな。でも、なんでそれがおもしろいんだろ？」

そんな時は、"I don't understand the punchline." って

言う必要があります。



欧米のJokeの面白さを理解するのは確かに難しい。

ジョークの面白さは英語が出来れば分かるわけでなく、

完璧に和訳ができても、Jokeがわかるとはかぎりません。

それどころか、和訳したものは、

英語ほどパンチがない事もありえます。

ジョークで笑えるようになるには、

読む前にある程度、前提となる考え方、

ステレオタイプ、ジョークの型（お決まりのパターン）

などに関する知識が必要です。

それが少しでもこのブログでわかればいいと思います。


A very popular type of joke

ひとつ、アメリカ人であればだれでも知っているJokeのパターンを紹介。

これは、「Knock Knock Joke」と言うもので、決まったパターンがあります。

ドアをはさみ、Aが訪問者でBが家の人です。

Jokeは毎回ドアをノックする音、"knock Knock" から始まります。

最初にAが言うのはfirst nameです。

Bはlast nameをきき、最後にAのpunchline！

A: Knock Knock.
B: Who’s there?
A: Nunya. 　　　
B: Nunya who?
A: Nunya business. 　　


最後のpunchlineわかりましたか？

Nunya Business = None of your business

None of your businessは決まり文句で、

「あなたには関係ない」

でも、このKnock Knock Jokeは基本的には

だじゃれなのです。別に、「あなたには関係ない」と

言っているから面白わけではありません。強引にNunya に納得のいく

（ジョークとして）名前を続けたから面白いのです。もちろん、最初の名前は

実際に存在する名前にします。その実際にある名前を用いてだじゃれを

言っているわけです。


A: Knock Knock.
B: Who’s there?
A: Justin.
B: Justin who?
A: Justin time for dinner.



つまり、"Just in time for dinner."
= 夕食にぎりぎり間に合った

決まり文句ではありませんが、

強引にJustin続くような名前をつけましたね。

"time in dinner" なんて名前の人いるのかって？

いないですよ、こんな名前の人。

要は、全部あわせて意味が通ればJokeは成立。
