What 3 letters change a girl into a woman?
女の子を女性にする3文字の言葉は？

答えは、age!

Where was the first potato found?
最初のジャガイモはどこで発見されましたか？

答えは, “in the ground”   地面に

Which is the most shocking city in the world?
世界で一番ショッキングな都市は？

答えは, Electricity　　最後に”city”がついてますよね。

Why is our nose not twelve inches long?
私達の鼻はなぜ12インチじゃないのですか？

答えは, Because then it would be a foot.
アメリカでは長さは、インチとフィートを
使います。　1インチは2.54センチ
12インチは１フィート
でも、フィートには足の意味もありますよね。

 Sunday and Monday had a fight. Sunday won. Why?
日曜日と月曜日がけんかしました。日曜が勝ちました。
なぜでしょう？

答えは,　Sunday が勝利しました。
MondayはWeak day (weekday) だからです。
weak=弱い

Types of Humour “Puns”   　 　　　

Pun: the clever or humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning,

    　or of words that have different meanings but sounds the same.

 

上は駄洒落の英英辞書の説明です。　
多意語をユーモアを伴って使うこと。

 

 

1. A man wanting to borrow another man's newspaper asks, "Are you finishe(d)?" The other man replies, "No, I'm Norwegian."

 

ここでは、finished（終わった） と　Finnish　（フィンランド人）

がpunです。　だから、相手は「ノルウェイ人です」と答えています。

 

 

2. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off?

He's all right now.

左側を切り落とされた男のこときいた？

彼は、all right (大丈夫)　　　　

でも“right”には右と言う意味もある

だから、「すべて右側ですよ」

 

3. I used to be a tailor but found the work to be just so-so.

 

So-so (まあまあ)と、　sew (縫う)がpunです。

Tailor (仕立て屋)なので　“sew”

 

 

4. A pessimist's blood type is always B-negative

血液型の話ですが、B-negative とは　B－

でも、Be negative (悲観的であれ)ともとれます。

このbeは、Be quietと同じ用法で

命令文の原形の”be”です。

 

5. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.　

光陰矢の如し　　　時間は矢のように飛ぶ
2個目の文章は、２つの読み方がある
ショウジョウバエはバナナが好きだ。(これが意図した意味）
（主語はfruit flies）

果物は、バナナのように飛ぶ。
(主語はfruit)
